Wedding party favors without spending a mint?

I want to do party favors but I don't want to spend alot of money because I'm on a budget also I was told by a friend that each bridesmaid must have something as a thankyou or a present for being a bridesmaids is this true ? Is it acceptable to make a donation to a charity in the bride's and groom's names in place of wedding favors. We were thinking of putting a card on each table reading --
